‘’’’Alisema Theobadina

''There are still 1.1 billion people in the world who do not have access to clean drinking water. E.P.I.C. (Everyday People Initiating Change) is a non-profit organization committed to bringing safe, clean drinking water to villages throughout the developing world in an efficient and sustainable manner. E.P.I.C. implements clean water wells through The Ripple Project, provides Hygiene and Sanitation Education programs, and supports Community Growth in each of the villages where they drill. Outside of Tanzania, Tennille and Alexi have started an E.P.I.C. Education program, where they share their story at schools and universities, encouraging other Everyday People to Initiate positive Change in the world.  E.P.I.C. is a grassroots organization, meaning that everything is run by a very small team of people. Each of the villages that are homes to E.P.I.C. projects are visited frequently to ensure the sustainability of the projects, while supporting further growth.  Please visit each individual project page for more information.''

HAVE YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO SEE THE WORLD, EXPERIENCE OTHER CULTURES AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

E.P.I.C.'s Fellowship Program is a leadership training program like no other. It’s an on the ground experience in global development, working and living within the communities we serve. We bring committed and passionate people LIKE YOU to communities that are ready to make a change;
  • Approximately 1.1 billion people in the world do not have access to safe water. This is roughly four in ten people.
  • More than 2.2 million people die each year from water related diseases.1.8 million children die every year as a result of diseases caused by unclean water and poor sanitation. This amounts to around 5000 deaths a day.
  • The leading cause of child death in the world is diarrhea, caused by contaminated water
  • A person needs 4 to 5 gallons of water per day to survive. The average American individual uses 100 to 176 gallons of water at home each day. The average African family uses about 5 gallons of water each day.
  • More people die each year from unsafe water than from all forms of violence, including war.
  • According to the World Health Organization, no single type of intervention has a greater overall impact on the national development of public health than does the provision of safe drinking water and proper disposal of human excreta.
  • The simple act of washing hands with soap and water can reduce diarrhoeal diseases by over 40% (British Medical Journal).
  • According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, a person can live for about a month without food, but only a week without water.
  • The World Health Organization states that women and children in the developing world spend over 200 million hours every day collecting water from distant, often polluted sources (often for up to 10 miles at a time). The weight of water that women in the developing world carry on their heads is commonly 20kg, the same as the average airport luggage allowance
  • Water collecting is often done at night and in the early hours of the morning, meaning that women and young children are placed at higher risk for sexual violence when walking long distances in remote areas to collect the water for their families.
  • An extra $10 billion each year is needed to reach the Millennium Development Goal target of halving the proportion of people without access to safe water and sanitation by 2015. This is about HALF of what rich countries spend on mineral water each year.
